Discography - John Eagan
ghosts and angels (2025) 5 tracks 48:20 A large portion of this album is dominated by a series of eponymous pieces all consisting of flowing atmospheric textural approaches. This album includes a 29 min bonus track that is set apart from the main album for listening on its own.
signal (2024) 6 tracks 44:15 A collection ranging from the gentle atmosphere of “The River Flows” to the higher energy (and maybe even slightly aggressive) drive of “And Then That” and “Signals in the Noise”.
the imaginary tourist (2023) 5 tracks 37:00 Each track of this album is slightly different, including something resembling rock music ("Pavilion Affair"), ending with the little musical trek of “The Road Home”.
anomaly (2023) 6 tracks 34:22 Sort of a soundtrack to a movie that does not exist. Features some experimentation of involving heavily processed human voices turned into samples played from a keyboard and treated as musical instruments with complex textures.
old trees in winter (2021) 6 tracks 30:03 Conceived and recorded over what, for him, was a remarkably short period over the winter of 2020/2021. The album broadly represents an impressionistic journey into a world broadly suggested by the title.
passage (2020) 3 tracks 29:08 This album was created in an unusual process stemming from thought about the nature of the medium of musical recordings as digital file downloads. The first piece released, “passage 1”, was first released as a lone single track, which was then later joined by the other two tracks to became a short album. The form and flow of the final album takes the listener on a journey suggested fairly explicitly by the title, moving from the dark and reflective atmosphere of the long beginning to a large orchestral finish.
call of the past (2020) single 8:29 This track was released as a single track on its own, a leftover result from the period of writing and recording the album “cinema”. It was left out of the final running order of that album as the album was assembled into its final form, as it never could quite fit properly. It was released years later because it was regarded as being a shame to leave it unheard in the archives.
through the valley (2019) single 9:21 This is something of a rare exception in John Eagan’s body of work, ever since leaving song form behind after a pair of rare and long out of print album releases in the late eighties. Through The Valley was originally sketched out in partial form long ago, and left partially done for years. It was later pulled out and completed, with vocals, in the summer of 2019.
twilight on water (2019) single 7:40 This single track, which could be described as a tone poem, was released on its own. It was a lone stray piece that had been lingering in finished form for many years without a home. It could be considered as an example of Eagan’s occasional trips into the world of what people commonly call “ambient”, or music for a soundtrack of a film that does not exist.
nocturnes (2019) 4 tracks 34:20 An album that many people would firmly plant in the “ambient music” bin, “nocturnes” is the result of a period of experimentation in musical recording processes some years ago. The pieces included were pulled out of the archives, given an extensive process of review, selection, and sonic massaging into their final form and released in 2019 as a little snapshot of a period of work. As suggested by the title, the album is meant for quiet late night listening, very literally following the ethos and concept of “ambient music” as quiet music to blend into the listening environment.
cinema (2018) 6 tracks 39:49 The album had a long path to its final form. It began with pieces that were partially recorded many years ago and largely abandoned. These initial works were slowly replaced by other music over an extended period of years and the album was mostly completed way around 2006. The album would finally be released in 2018. Many tracks recorded during that period were set aside, for reasons of overall album flow and atmosphere, including the track “call of the past” that was eventually released as a single track.
distant cities (2002) 9 tracks 58:11 This album that took shape over several years, from its beginning seeds of ideas in the late nineties through to its completion and small scale release in the Spring of 2002. It was re-released as a digital download in late 2018 along with the initial release of the album “cinema”. This album covers a broad range of musical territory that was all inspired, in some form or another, by a long road trip across the United States, particularly by time spent in the desert southwest of the United States.
